Ballroom Dresses and Sneakers

The decorated entrance to the event.

Before I first walked in I was expecting to see a bunch of students laced up in their nicest ballroom dresses and tuxedos. And I was right, kind of.. There were those who actually dressed up like this was their second chance at prom and then there were those who dressed like I should have been asking them if they had their hall passes on them. This event was hosted by SGA and funded by Student Development. The setting of this Get Back Your Prom event was the Valencia West Campus Special Events Center, decorated with what seemed like the budget of a middle school dance, but it was still a very nice set up. There was a big sign in the front of the room that read Prom City, a live DJ set up in one corner of the room, a couple of tables on one side of the room, and even a self serve buffet lined up against one wall of the room. Then there was the most important part of the room, the dance floor, which was exactly what anyone would expect; a section of carpet filled with people wanting to dance. The room was filled with about a hundred or so Valencia students from every campus who took the mid-semester opportunity to let loose and they seemed to be really enjoying themselves. There were even giveaways all night to students who simply showed up.

A day after April Fools, I told my mother that I was going to prom and she thought I was joking, but on that 2nd day of April I really did get a chance to Get Back My Prom. Was this the most prestigious event ever? No, and neither was it the most elegant, aesthetically pleasing, nor many other things. But it was an opportunity for students across campuses to come together, dance moronically, sing obnoxiously, and enjoy each other’s presence and that's exactly what
your first prom was supposed to be like. Except instead of this being one of the last times you get to have fun with your friends, it is one of the first great times you get to enjoy with your college classmates. In that aspect this was a very successful and entertaining event. I did not get to stay long enough to be able to see the multiple winners of prom King and Queen from each campus, but I think that all of us that got to get back our prom were the true winners of the night.
